The bunny had a successful journey delivering chocolate eggs! Bouncing back home with all those goodies must have been quite the adventure. I hope everyone enjoyed the treats and had a wonderful Easter celebration.

It is with deepest sorrow that we bring this notice to all our chatters today.  

We are saddened to announce the passing of one of our Navigators, Forestroundup, on the 26th February. Forestroundup,

Forestroundup was a chatter for nearly 23 years and a part of the Navigator team for many years. She was a friend to many on chat always happy to help everyone. Her presence will be sorely missed.

There is no night without a dawning

No winter without a spring

And beyond the dark horizon

Our hearts will once more sing…

For those who leave us for a while

Have only gone away

Out of a restless, care worn world

Into a brighter day.

 

Rest in peace Forestroundup. Our thoughts go out to her family and friends.

Embarkation - Changes Are Coming

Hello Chatters!

Yes you read it correctly, some changes are coming to the Embarkation rooms.  In the not too distant future the Embarkation rooms will be returning to their original purpose; they’re to be used by genuinely new chatters only.

 

This means that you won’t be able to use Embarkation if you’ve previously had a Chat name that outranked Embarkation Port (Able Rating).  Also, you won’t be able to use Embarkation if you’ve been a regular user of Chat for more than 6 months.

 

  • The maximum Chatter rank that is able to use Embarkation will be lowered to Steward Level 5.
     
  • Embarkation Starboard will be closed.
     
  • Swearing and talk of a sexual, lewd, aggressive or overly controversial nature won’t be allowed. Embarkation will return to a more gentle, welcoming room.  
  • The above changes will take place at 8:30pm on Sunday 18th February 2024
  • PMs to and from Chatters in Embarkation will be disabled (with the exception of being able to PM a navigator for assistance).  This change will happen at a later date.

Questions and Answers

Why are we doing this?  We want experienced Chatters to feel more free to chat as adults, having adult conversations, using adult words.  Embarkation was never intended for this purpose - it’s what the Adult Deck was created for.  We also want genuinely new Chatters to NOT be bombarded by PM and friend requests (this especially applies to new female Chatters).

 

What if I don’t want to use another room?  You’re welcome to use Embarkation until you reach the new maximum rank (Steward Level 5) or you’ve been using Chat regularly for 6 months on any name.  Once you meet these criteria you will have to use other rooms.

 

What if I have a Diamond?  The Diamond Chat Package will still allow you to access Embarkation after you’ve reached the maximum rank (the six month rule will also not apply) so you’ll still be able to use Embarkation, however you will be required to follow the rules of the room i.e. no swearing and no sexual talk.  PMs will NOT be available while you’re in Embarkation.

 

What are the benefits to me as a Chatter?  It may sound like there’s nothing in this for you but there is! 

  • You won’t need to create new names every few months just because you’ve outranked Embarkation.  
     
  • You’ll benefit from all the cool stuff that attaining a high Chat rank gives you.  Some of you might even dust off your Neptunian ranked Chat names and get free Spy Info etc.
     
  • You won’t get navigators on your case if you turn the air a bit blue on the Adult Deck (just don’t drop the C-bomb and you’ll be fine).  All the other rules of Chat Etiquette still apply and remember that other decks aren’t so relaxed.

Will you be... my Valentine?

It's that time of year again... that special time for luurrve!

It's not just for those loved up people that make your stomach turn, but also a time to share your love with friends, family members or even the pet goldfish!

A simple little note here, a kind gesture there, can go a long way for many by just knowing someone cares.

Why not join us and get in the mood by sending a special Lycos Chat Valentine's message?

Shhh... For the next 7 days you have the opportunity to pass on a heartfelt message to another chatter completely anonymously.

Tell you more? Sure thing!

Send a shipmail to St.Valentine with your special message but make sure in the subject box you put the name of the chatter (chat name) it's for.  St.Valentine will then pass it on.

Hold your horses! Don't get carried away just yet. There are, of course, some rules:

  • No nasty messages.
  • No real or pet names that give a clue who it's from. The person sending the message will to be anonymous.
  • No overly sexual messages. Although, you can send a kiss or two 

Messages received after midday (GMT) on the 15th of February will not be passed on.

Messages that do not meet the above requirements will also not be passed on.

Calling NEW Navigators

What is a Navigator?

Navigators are chatters who volunteer to spend a lot of time helping out and keeping order on the chat.


The ideal Navigator knows every little secret on the Chat, he or she is extremely patient, both when helping out newbies and when dealing with occasional trouble.


Only very experienced chatters become Navigators, so if you feel like helping others and want to help make the chat a nice place for everyone, it could be just the challenge for you.

How to become a Navigator

Would you like to be a Chat Navigator?

Before answering this question there are some things you should know.

Being a Navigator is not an easy role to fulfil. It is demanding, takes hard work and dedication and a lot of online time. Despite this, it's also great fun. Many navigators much prefer it to being a chatter.

  1. As a navigator you're an ambassador for the Chat. This means that chatters watch everything you say and do. Behave inappropriately, and it gives all Navigators a bad name. Being helpful at all times when on and off watch, shows what a great team we are.
  2. Navigators are the first people new chatters meet and their most important task is to make sure that these newbies have a good experience the first time they are on board.
  3. Some chatters will see it as their job to try to wind you up. If they succeed, they win. If they don't, everyone wins :) Therefore you have to be helpful and patient when people ask you a question. As a Navigator your behaviour should be spotless on the chat at all times.

If you are the kind of person who gets emotional easily, then being a navigator may not be for you. You must be objective always; NEVER taking sides, even when your friends are involved, and always play devils advocate. Never make assumptions.
You must be able to keep confidences, both chatters and other Navigators may come to you with problems. And you will also be the first to find out about new things too – you must be able to keep these things close to your chest! Having the patience of a saint too is necessary! Some chatters take a while to help, and you need to ensure that your personality can cope with these demanding times.

You should also ask yourself, Am I a team player? This is a very important question as the Navigator system can only work with a team spirit. All ranks working together for a common goal.

All this said, being a navigator is very rewarding. Just ask any of our existing Navigators and they will tell you that nothing beats the feeling of when you help a chatter or solve a dispute and receive a huge Thank you.
So, still interested? Then you also need to meet the following criteria.
  1. You must have been a chatter for at least 6 months.
  2. You must have a minimum chat rank of Midshipman (although exceptions may be made by Chiefs).
  3. You must have a clear chat record, with no serious bans/behaviour issues in the last 6 months.
  4. You must also have completed the 5 standard chat quests. /sing, /shout, /whisper, /sleep, /love.

    If you are a former navigator ranked 3rd or above and wish to return to the team on any name, please contact a chief navigator to discuss your options.



If you meet the criteria above, you can apply to become a navigator. Depending on the recruitment needs, you may be approached directly, you may be able to contact a 1st or Chief Navigator and express interest, or you may have to take the exam, or any combination of these. We reserve the right to change the recruitment methods at any time, and this is at the discretion of Chief Navigators.

If you would like to be a navigator, and do not qualify yet, then take this time to get to know everything there is to know about the chat. The more you know, the more you'll be able to help others.
